Why screen cutting allowance changes the roll count

Two documented installation methods, one batch, and a surprisingly different shopping list.

There is no single allowance in every guide

Phifer’s window-screen instructions call for ½ inch beyond each side of the frame. ADFORS’ window guide calls for 2 inches on each side. Mesh Measure exposes those choices and allows a custom value. Choose the method that applies to the product you are installing.

Four small frames: a worked comparison

Consider four frames, each 16 × 34 inches. At ½ inch extra per side, each blank is 17 × 35. Two blanks fit across a 36-inch roll, and two rows need 70 inches of length. That fits a nominal 36 × 84 inch roll.

At 2 inches extra per side, each blank is 20 × 38. Only one fits across the same 36-inch width. An 84-inch roll holds two of these blanks, so the batch needs two rolls. The larger allowance is not “wrong”; it simply changes the purchase.

Do not reduce allowance to force a cheaper result

The comparison explains material use. It does not override installation guidance. If a required blank is exactly as wide as a nominal roll, there is no remaining width margin. Check the actual material before relying on that fit.

Window screens are the scope

Patio panels, doors and pool enclosures can use different measurement and installation methods. This tool’s presets are for removable rectangular window frames, not a universal takeoff for every screening project.
