How to measure a window screen for replacement mesh
Start with the removable frame, then add the correct working allowance.
Measure the item you are rescreening
This calculator uses the outside width and height of the removable screen frame. Those dimensions are different from the window opening and from the distance between spline grooves. Mixing those conventions can change the cut size. Keep the frame square on a flat surface while you measure.
Record a batch clearly
Name each size by room or location. If four frames truly share the same measurements, enter that size with a quantity of four. If they differ, add separate rows rather than averaging. The printed plan gives each physical cut its own row-and-piece identifier.
Add the working allowance
The tool adds the selected allowance to both sides of each dimension. A 24 × 40 inch frame with a ½ inch allowance on every edge therefore needs a 25 × 41 inch blank. Follow the instructions for your selected material; the allowance menu includes sourced methods and a custom setting.
Keep measurement precision
Enter fractions as decimals: ½ is .5, ¼ is .25 and ⅛ is .125. Switching between inches and centimeters converts the existing measurements. Do not round a required piece down to make it fit a narrower roll.
Before cutting
Check the actual usable mesh width, frame condition and material direction. Cut one trial panel before cutting an entire batch. Follow the manufacturer’s installation sequence and trim excess after the mesh is secured.
